No people write real music today, you just have to look for it. The internet has really screwed up the music industry, no one buys music anymore. Also music went through a creativity rut recently, I think the whole internet thing has prolonged it. Then you have to take into account 9/11 and the war, most people just wanted "fun and light" music because of that. I mean I don't think grunge bands like Soundgarden would have been popular now. People just want to get drunk to Lady gaga.
